SHARAN

Introduction:

SHARAN was established in 1979 as a volunteer group committed to serving the urban poor. Since then SHARAN has evolved programmes of a holistic and comprehensive nature that aim at providing a better quality of life to the urban poor. Today SHARAN has a staff of over 125 and projects ranging from health care, education, development, income generation, savings and co-operatives to management of drug use and HIV/AIDS. SHARAN’s greatest strength is its ability to develop a close relationship with communities, involving participation from personally affected people. The design and implementation of the various programmes at SHARAN demonstrate a deep understanding of the values and needs of the communities involved.

Activities:

  • comprehensive HIV/AIDS and STD treatment and care programme for intravenous drug users and their sexual partners in 5 cities of India
  • drop in centre at Yamuna bazaar is part of the project HIV Intervention among injecting drug users and their sexual partners in five Indian cities
  • Sharan Detoxification Unit offers short term residential detoxification services for drug users wanting to give up the habit
  • Rapid Situation Assessment in five Indian Cities
  • AIDS education, care, counselling and support project which targets commercial sex workers and their children
  • Men's Sexual Health Project targets clients of commercial sex workers, mostly daily wage earners such as Rickshawallas and labourers
  • Cyber Cafe training & income generation project
  • Nangla Machi Slum Project - a primary health initiative with a successful small savings component
  • Barakhamba Development Project has primary health, education and income generation activities
  • Sharan Schools project: Sharan now operates 10 schools in Delhi slums giving education to approximately 450 children and their families
  • Sharan Crisis Care Shelter project which provides crisis care to homeless clients in need of residential care and support due to their drug use, HIV status and other crises
  • Improving Hospital Environment for HIV positive clients in India - this is an Operation Research Project aiming to contribute towards understanding how to improve hospital settings for People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and their families and the objective is to assess certain aspects of care services available in the hospitals.

Areas of expertise:

Since the 1990s SHARAN has specialised in the areas of microfinance and HIV/AIDS.
